Poker advice needed please guys. Newbee to texas hold'em.
Hello peeps,
Texas holdem
I need a little advice on best way to go about it and where to play.
I am a very very very low roller, I just dont have the money to lose. I would like to try texas holdem on my next trip to Vegas.
I have played free online and on my DS and have done quite well. I am quite agressive..(I think) but I would like to play in real life to see how I fair.
I am not sure on the betting amounts...ie how much to call, how much to raise ect..
I would like a low limit table, so I dont lose all of my hard earned spending money, and a table where if I make mistakes, I wont be shot down in flames and the dealer will guide me etc.
Where is the best place to go. I would prefer a strip casino, has this is where we will be stayng.
Many thanks Gina

Are you looking for limit or no limit? There are a ton of decent tournaments out there if you want to play one of those. You'll have less risk to lose, since typically you can only buy in once.

Well I take it a no limit table, would be silly as someone could bet thousands on a hand.
I gathered a low limit table would be 1 or 2 $ a betting round.

Don't know why people are asking you if you want limit or no limit since you clearly state you have a small bankroll and do not even know the fundamentals and betting structure of the game. If you're going to play live poker you need to stick with limit poker as you will have some time to learn in a limit game. In no limit you can lose your entire buy-in on the first hand or any hand for that matter.
I would recommend you find some low buy-in tournaments as you will be limited to what you can lose (can't loose more than your buy-in). The Sahara has daily $45 tournaments if that isn't too far for you. Most poker rooms have tournaments you just have to find a buy-in you can afford. Again, limit poker will minimize the chance of you losing your entire stack in one hand.
I would save no limit games until you get the fundamentals of the game down.

You do not want to play in a tournament. If you play in a tournament and are not one of the top finishers you lose your entire buy-in. There is no chance to win or even break even unless you are one of the few at the end.
What you want is a low limit cash game. Fortunately it is pretty easy to find a $2-$4 game.
This means the bet is $2 before the flop and the 1st card after the flop.
Then the bet increases to $4 for the 4th & 5th cards.
You can probably sit down in this game for $20-$30.
Bellagio, Wynn, and Venetian are probably the only hotels on the strip that won't have a game at this level.
You don't say where you are staying, but unless it's at one of these hotels it should be easy to find a game.
Good Luck.

He says he doesn't know how to bet, call and raise...there is no chance for him to win in a live game either. I was much more comfortable learning in tournaments than I was in a live cash game. Too each his own I guess.

Re: Poker advice needed please guys. Newbee to texas hold'em.
My suggestion would be: Excalibur
Every day at 11AM Excalibur offers free poker lessons. These lessons aren't "How to play poker" but are "How to play poker in a casino poker room"
So that will cover everything from:
How to buy in
How to cash out
How to post your blinds
How to bet, raise, fold
What you can and can't do when its your turn or another players turn
How to tip the dealer
Basic poker ettiquette
While the lessons are going on you won't lose any money as its all instructional. When the lessons are over they make the table "live" where you can either get up and go, or you can stay and play some real poker with the other players who went through the lesson with you.
When they make the table live the limits also start pretty low, usually either a $1/$2 limit or $2/$4 limit game, or a $1/$3 spread limit game. At 3PM they also have a "Poker Room Happy Hour" where they have a max $3 rake on all games.
As far as playing styles go the only style that really works at $2/$4 LHE is the super-dooper-oober tight. You can't bluff, you can't push people off hands, multiple players will call to the river with junk hoping for a miracle, players will bet and cap betting with bottom pair and no kicker. So you are best off only getting involved in there with good hands that have the best chance of winning in the end.

I think Bill's Gamblin Hall would be perfect for you. It's got a good mid-strip location, it is a low limit nl hold em game with the smallest buy in and smallest blinds in the city. Minimum buy in is $20 and blinds are 50 cents-$1
The game is really relaxed and for not very much money you could learn the game and get that live poker action you want.

Re: Poker advice needed please guys. Newbee to texas hold'em.
The first thing you need to do is, realize that Texas Hold 'em played for money and Texas Hold 'em played for fun (no money) are two completely different games. When there's nothing at stake, people play very very different than they do when there is money on the line.
Like others have mentioned, find a low buy in limit game, or a low fee no rebuy tournament and start from there. Also, try playing at a smaller room, like at the El Cortez, late at night when all the crazy people are there and they're too drunk and\or high to know what they're doing.

Ugh, the El Cortez game.....one of the strangest group of oddballs I've ever met at a card table in Vegas. I agree if you want to start slowly, this would be the place to try it.
Last time I was there, they had a 1-3-6 game, where you could only bet up to $6 on the river. It was just a strange setup all around.
